The proposed area for the dedicated HT room is on the left. Notice all the duct work that will need to be moved.

Another view of the new theater room.
My theater designer (Dennis Erskine) says I shouldn't get too attached to those windows...
Picture taken 02/26/2000
Bye bye, windows...
Picture taken 02/28/2000
The windows are framed in, and a new wall has been constructed in front of the old.
Picture taken 02/29/2000
Notice how the new ceiling only touches the new inside walls. This means no contact between the
theater and the rest of the house, except through the concrete floor.
Picture taken 02/29/2000
Drywall finally up!
The theater is through that big hole. It is tall because the entrance is in the back of the theater,
which is raised 10 inches.

Now, my interior construction begins!
This picture shows the beginning of the stage, PT 2x8 lumber on top of 30 pound felt.
Picture taken 04/15/2000
This detail will be the base of the left speaker column, angled toward the listening position.
This also shows the felt under the joists.
Picture taken 04/15/2000
Here I have added the radius curve for the front of the stage. Cool, huh?
Picture taken 04/16/2000
And then, we fill it with... SAND? You bet. This provides a solid platform for the subs
Picture taken 04/16/2000
Finally, top it all with a layer of 1/2" plywood (did I mention sandwiching that 1/2" in between two
layers of 3/4" inch plywood?)
Picture taken 05/06/2000
Turning around, we see the seating platform is taking shape.
It is framed out the same as the stage, with 30 pound felt under the joists.
Picture taken 04/16/2000
The seating platform gets fiberglass batting between the joists, and then all those
layers of plywood... AAAARRRGGGHH! I'm sick of plywood now!
Picture taken 04/16/2000
Here are the steps leading into the theater. Same triple plywood construction.
These floors are REALLY solid! This also shows the solid core doors with weatherstripping.

From farther back, showing some of the rest of the basement in progress.

The projector mounts here. HVAC return mounts at rear of projector to help cooling.
RGB, Component and CAT-5 cables are routed to equipment closet.

Several columns for looks and function. This one hides a HVAC supply.
Picture taken 05/06/2000
All columns, soffets, platforms, steps, etc. get filled with fiberglass batting.
Picture taken 05/06/2000
Really starting to take shape now.
The construction of the soffets is shown in pretty good detail here.
Picture taken 05/13/2000
A look at the right rear shows more soffet detail.
The equipment rack location is also visible, looking through to the equipment closet behind.
Picture taken 05/13/2000
Columns, soffets and proscenium are built, and ready for trim out.
Notice the bare framed columns? They will hold the surround speakers.
Acoustical cloth gets stretched oround the column with the speaker inside.

Looking back at the rear of the theater.
I'm in a hurry now, so the painter is going to help me with the ceiling.
Picture taken 05/19/2000
Cool color, huh?
primered the walls with the same color, since I had plenty, to cut down on dust.
Picture taken 05/20/2000
Added a 2" half-round across the front of the overhangs. Adds a nice touch as I get ready for carpet.
Picture taken 05/20/2000
Added a step on the left and right end of the front of the raised platform.
You can also see that the carpet is going in.
Picture taken 05/20/2000
Carpet is in! Turned out great!
Picture taken 05/21/2000
I really like the way this stage is turning out.
The radius curve is a nice touch.

Another view of the proscenium. This channel will house rope lighting.
Picture taken 05/21/2000

Ready for wall treatments!
The bare framing is painted black because the acoustical fabric is somewhat transparent.
Also, red mahogany has been applied to bottom half of columns.
Picture taken 05/24/2000

A view of the right rear shows the equipment rack in place.
Picture taken 05/24/2000

The holes have been cut in the proscenium for the speakers.

Fabric is installed! WOW, Mardi and Sherman Peiffer
(Showtime Theaters) do GREAT work!

and the equipment rack mostly populated

I have started installing the molding. So far so good!
Picture taken 06/01/2000
The surround speakers are installed in the upper part of the columns, behind a
thin layer of acoustically transparent fabric. You can see the access panel here.
Picture taken 06/01/2000

This closeup shows the wall fabric pattern pretty well. Nice stuff!

Equipment Rack. Still need 2U Fan module for above the
amps to keep the upper rack components cooler. Anyone know
of a good one?
Picture taken 06/01/2000

Voila! Trim done, chairs in.
